music magazine questionnaire responses

Although 4 more boys answered my questionnaire than girls, I am going to aim my music magazine at mainly 13-18 aged females. This is because I feel I can target girls easier because I understand their likes and interests more than I do boys. I will aim the content at 13-18 year olds because these are the ages that are most into the latest trends and music. Also, these are the ages that answered my questionnaire the most and so I will know their requirements. The most popular genre of music is RnB and Pop. Taking this into consideration, I'll make my magazine based on these two categories to appeal to my audience. It's also the type of music i know lots about and listen to regularly so I feel it would be the best choice for me to make my product on. Although most of my questionnaire results preferred a magazine to be published fortnightly, I will ensure that it's a monthly published magazine. My reasons for this is because more can happen in the music industry in a month than in a fortnight. This way there will be more to read, and the readers wont get bored because there will be fresh, advanced information every month. Also, leaving it a month before releasing a new edition can leave the public wanting more and becoming loyal to my magazine. A risk here is that they will get bored waiting and buy a magazine that's released more often. To avoid this I'll make my publication different from the others and hopefully better. 86.7% of the people that answered my questionnaire like freebees, therefore I will definitely include free things in my magazine because everyone likes free things and I need to appeal to their preferences. The most popular colours for the front of my magazine are grey, black and white. These are all very plain, and aren't aimed at any particular gender so would be good for the front of my magazine to make it neutral. To ensure to appeal to my audience I will make the main image black and white because this seems to be the attraction. Having all dull colours won't make it stand out though, so I have decided to include the fourth popular colour, blue. This might change to green depending on which looks better when I make the product but I feel having at least one bright colour might make it more striking. Upcoming events and charts were the most popular for the content of my magazine, so I will include these within my product to make it appealing and so more people buy it. Most people voted Yes on the multi platform question, so I will ensure that my magazine will be purchasable online as well as print. I've chosen it to be online because nowadays young people typically use their tablets and handheld electronic devices to read. Lastly, I will make my magazine £2. This is to compete with other magazines because usually they are around £2.50. This way, the audience will think see it's cheaper and buy mine instead of theirs. Also, I feel it is a considerable price considering the content.

the magazine industry

The magazine industry

Demand for magazines is driven largely by growth in consumer income. The profitability of individual companies depends highly on marketing expertise. Small companies can compete by specializing in niche topics and markets, while larger companies benefit from a wide selection of magazine titles to offer advertisers. People in the UK are continuing to buy fewer magazines, with circulations in the market place dropping by than more than 15 millions copies in 2014.
TV Choice remains the UK's biggest-selling magazine in the UKdespite its average weekly sale falling 7.9% year on year in the second half of 2014.
Less and less people are buying printed magazines because it's a lot more easier to purchase them electronically: it saves time and energy. Also, young people nowadays are using hand held devices to read and so as this becomes more popular, digital versions of magazines will rise. Monthly title, BBC History, has recorded an astonishing 693% rise in digital circulation. Vogue, has seen theirs jump up by just over 463%. This is to suit the needs of the public and their preferred method of purchase.
In 2010, the weekly proportion spent on printed magazines in the average UK household was 0.57%. This dropped to 0.46% in 2013. In 2010, 0.49% of the average UK household's weekly magazine spending went towards internet subscriptions. By 2013, this went up to 0.54%. These figures show that less people are buying print magazines and purchasing the online versions instead. As technology develops, so does the audiences preferences in which they buy their magazines. It's more likely that if the magazines target audience is young adults, they will sell more of their copies online because nowadays, the younger readers typically use the internet more.
The cost of putting an advert in a magazine depends on the size, frequency, regional rates, colour and positioning. Adverts are more expensive to put in magazines if they're large, colourful, in more than one issue and a popular magazine. Although this may be a risk advertisers are prepared to make because the more the advert stands out, the more people will see it and go and buy the product.

billboard magazine case study

Billboard magazine case study

Billboard magazine was launched in the fall of 1894 by two partners, William H. Donaldson and James H. Hennegan, as a publication for the billposting business. The new magazine was called Billboard Advertising and was published monthly. The first issue was released November 1st 1894 and was eight pages long. The cover price was 10 cents. By Billboard Advertising's anniversary, it was running a steady 16 pages; with a yearly subscription of $1. In February 1897, Billboard Advertising made a major shift in direction. The magazine's name was shortened to The Billboard, a handle it would carry until 1961- when it would be renamed Billboard Music Week. Today's Billboard is helmed by president and publisher John Killcullen, with co-executive editors Tamara Conniff and Ken Schlager heading up the editorial team.
The target audience for Billboard varies from 16 to 26. This is because the magazine provides its readers with updates from the charts and all other music genres. This includes R n B, pop, rock, and metal. Having lots of different music genres makes the target audience wider and allows different ages of people to purchase the magazine.    Billboard uses several different platforms. One of these platforms is an online magazine. This is to appeal to the younger audience because typically they are known to use online things rather than a hand-held book. It encourages the younger audience to buy Billboard online, and having a hand-held magazine encourages the older audience to buy it in a shop.

Advertisers mood board

This moodboard represents the types of products that will be advertised in my magazine. They are all products that are appealing to my target audience so that's the reason I chose then to be in my magazine. I feel as though they will catch the eyes of my readers because they will mostly be teenage girls who listen to modern pop music so I have taken this and chose brands and products that these type of people will most like and be attracted to. Also, there are a few brands that are unisex and would appeal to boys as well. I will ensure to include adverts for boys in my magazine as well because it's not just for girls. Hopefully, I will appeal to generally young people and I will show this through the variety of adverts and also the content.

Target audience mood board

These images represent the target audience that read my magazine. There are pictures of young groups of friends to represent the age group of my readers. Some are looking down at their phones to show that they use technology, this is to show their youth and interest to the internet. The images of festivals and popular trends like Tumblr and penny boarding signifies my target audience are young and up to date with the latest technology and trends. Adding well known brands to my mood board implies that my audience follow the trends and so will buy my magazine because it will be the latest trend on the magazine market. The image of someone playing a guitar represents that my audience enjoys playing and listening to music.

Music Magazine Analysis

College Magazine Analysis

This college magazine front cover has three main colours, they are green, black and white. It has stuck to the traditional rule of having three main colours and three main fonts. This is so it doesn’t look too overwhelming and in-your-face. The boldness of the text varies according to the parts the writer wants the readers to look at most. The main image is central and the subheadings are more or less symmetrical on either side, this is so it looks more appealing to the eye and so it’s more eye catching on a shop shelf. The background has been made black so that the green text stands out more. The title is COLLEGE so will immediately stand out to those who attend college and are of the age group of the boy who’s the main image.
